Zanetta Mitchell Obituary

Zaneta E. Mitchell was born to the late Marion Hampton and Dinkey Mitchell on May 25, 1950, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.  The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Zaneta received her education.

After relocating to Clairton, Pennsylvania in 1970, Nita as she was affectionately called by her family and friends became the first African American to be employed at Braum’s Meat Market here in Clairton, Pennsylvania.  She was also employed at United States Steel Works in Duquesne, Pennsylvania until it closed in 1984.  Nita went on to work at many fast food establishments until she retired.

Nita was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church for over forty years. She joined under the leadership of the late Reverend Rosamond C. Kay.  She loved her church and church family; she was an active member of M.S.B.C Usher Board #2.

Nita took pride in her community for which she lived, Marion Circle.  She would clean up, look after the children, providing them with treats, and she knew every child’s name.  She had a sense of humor, was easy going but wouldn’t take any mess. Nita loved knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She loved to sing, her favorite song was “Yes Lord.”  She also had several euphemisms. Her favorite one was,  “I’m a small piece of leather but I’m well put together.”

Zaneta departed this life on Thursday, December 12, 2019, in Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  She was preceded in death by her siblings; sister, Pearl Harris and brother, Carl Hampton.  Along with her devoted companion, Cleveland Adams.

She was loved by many and will be remembered by her daughter, Marla Hampton; brothers, Steven (Nichole) Hampton, Samuel Hampton, Morris (Cookie) Hampton, Paul Hampton; sisters, Linda (Earl) Wanzo, Betty Hampton, Doreatha (John) Cunningham, Hazel Hampton, and Rebecca Hampton; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; along with a host of family and friends
