Wilfred Williams, Jr. Obituary

We commemorate the life and legacy of Mr. Wilfred H. Williams, Jr., who passed away at the age of 81, on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. A lifelong resident of Pittsburgh, born on October 11, 1942, He was the beloved son of the late Wilfred and Eleanor M. Tucker–Hayes. Wilfred was a beacon of service, community development, and familial love.

Wilfred’s early commitment to service was evident when he left Gladstone High School to join the Army in 1959, distinguishing himself as a Tank Commander, Military Police officer, and expert marksman. His honorable discharge in 1962 began a lifelong dedication to public service and community empowerment. His academic journey resumed at Point Park University, culminating in a degree that would pave the way for a remarkable career dedicated to the upliftment of underrepresented communities.

His professional path was characterized by significant roles that bridged the gap between ambition and opportunity for minorities. Starting his career with Community Action Pittsburgh, Wilfred worked tirelessly as a Job Developer, advocating for business loans to help minorities establish their businesses. His journey through OIC Opportunity, Urban Redevelopment, and as the Human Resource Manager for UPS exemplified his unwavering commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Perhaps most notably, before his retirement in 2002, Wilfred served with distinction as the Executive Aide to State Senator James Ferlo, representing the 38th Senatorial District. In this role, he was instrumental in shaping policies and initiatives that benefited not only the district's constituents but also set a precedent for community engagement and development across the state. His work in the Pennsylvania State Senate is a testament to his vision of a more inclusive, empowered, and equitable society.

Wilfred’s life was deeply rooted in his faith, reflected in his active participation in the Wesley Center AME Zion Church, and his personal life, filled with love, laughter, and the simple joys, like his fondness for coffee and good humor, endeared him to all who knew him. As we reflect on Wilfred’s life, we recognize his monumental contributions to public service, his dedication to fostering opportunities for the underserved, and his unwavering commitment to his family and faith. His legacy is an inspiring blueprint for leadership, compassion, and community advocacy. As state representatives and members of the community he served, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have on the lives of many. Wilfred H. Williams, Jr.’s life work inspires us to pursue justice, equity, and service for the betterment of our communities.

He leaves behind a loving family: his wife of 27 years, Michelle J. Williams; his children, Erich H. Williams (Jeanette), Garret E. Williams, Martiz W. Williams, LeShelle D.
