Patricia Ann Hawkins Obituary

Patricia Ann Hawkins, a cherished mother, grandmother, and dedicated member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Duquesne, departed this life peacefully on January 18, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by her family. Born on October 19, 1944, in Moultrie, Colquitt County, Georgia, she was the beloved daughter of the late Dock Hawkins and Adeline McKenzie-Hawkins.

Throughout her life, Patricia exemplified the values instilled in her from a young age within her Christian-Baptist upbringing. Growing up in a household where faith, family, and community were paramount, she was immersed in the teachings of Jesus Christ, which shaped her character and outlook on life. Patricia often reminisced about her formative years "down home," sharing heartwarming stories that reflected the love and devotion of her family, as well as the strong sense of community that defined her early life. In the summer of 1952, at the tender age of eight, Pat experienced a profound moment of clarity during a sermon that was delivered on salvation that spoke directly to her heart; she joined the Mother Easter Baptist Church of Moultrie, and was baptized in the river near her home, surrounded by her family and congregation. The cold water enveloped her as she emerged, symbolizing not just her faith, but a birth into a new life with Christ.

Following the death of her mother in 1958, Pat, alongside her baby-sister, Bobbi Jean, found their world turned upside down. At 14 years old, she was uprooted from her childhood home and taken to Duquesne, Pennsylvania, by her uncle, Sollie McKenzie. The move marked the beginning of a new chapter, one filled with both challenges and opportunities. Life in Duquesne was a far cry from what Pat had known—the shadow of her parents' absence loomed over her. Her uncle Sollie, a kind yet firm figure, became her protector and guardian amidst the grief. As the years passed, Patricia transformed from a grieving child into a strong-willed woman, shaped by her experiences and nurtured by love.

After settling into her adulthood in Duquesne, Pat was blessed to find a new church home, where she worshipped, and faithfully served for over 50 years until her health began to decline; she was a respected member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Her unwavering commitment was evident through her many years of service and participation in various roles, including the usher board, senior choir, pastor’s aide, and kitchen committee. The church became her second home, a place to grow spiritually among those who shared her beliefs. It was there that she learned about compassion, service, and the importance of living out her faith in her everyday life. Each of these contributions played a pivotal role in enriching the Macedonia Church.

As a mother of six—Pat navigated the busy chaos of family life with grace and a heart full of compassion. Although Pat never had the chance of obtaining a formal education, she always emphasized the significance of learning and knowledge to her children and grandchildren. Her passion for education inspired them to value their studies and strive for excellence, no matter the obstacles they faced.

It's incredible how her belief in the power of education has left a lasting impression. She found joy in the knowing that all six of her children successfully completed high school and furthered their education upon graduation.

Patricia had a special place in her heart for the youth. She believed that nurturing young minds was essential for building a brighter future. With this belief at her core, she took on the task of advocating and managing a year-round youth program located in Burns Heights. “The Center” as it was commonly called, became a gathering place for children and teens from the neighborhood. Whether they needed help with their homework, a listening ear, or simply a safe place to hang out, ‘Ms. Pat’ was always there with open arms. Beyond her work with the youth program, Pat's involvement with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has made a profound difference in the community. She aided with monthly distributions of food and necessities which have been a lifeline for many families in need. Pat truly embodied the spirit of service and dedicated her life to giving back.

Pat’s life stood as a beacon of light within the Duquesne community, embodying the love of Christ that was instilled in her from the very beginning. Her story is a testament to the beauty of being raised in a Southern Baptist home—a journey not just marked by tradition, but a personal relationship with God, rooted in faith, community, and love. Patricia transformed her childhood pain into purpose, leaving behind a story of resilience and faith. Her nurturing spirit extended well-beyond her immediate family. She was well-regarded for her ability to foster connections and create lasting bonds with all those she met. Pat’s legacy left an indelible mark on the many lives she touched. Nan, while your journey on earth may have ended, your spirit will continue to live on, resonating in our hearts, mirrored in our actions, and reflected in the love we share. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find peace and joy in knowing that your love is our inheritance, and your wisdom will always be our guiding light.
