Michael Henry Walker Obituary

Michael Henry Walker, 78, of Clairton, Pennsylvania, was born on April 11, 1946, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, he was the cherished son of the late Robert Walker Sr. and Joyce Ann Angram Walker.

Michael was a proud graduate of Clairton High School’s Class of 1964, where his remarkable athleticism earned him recognition as a well-known basketball player. His talent was acknowledged with multiple scholarship offers, but life charted a different course for him when he was drafted into the United States Army. During his service, he was stationed in Korea. Michael was affectionately known as "Walk," a nickname that reflected his easygoing nature and camaraderie with his fellow soldiers.

After completing his military service, Michael worked briefly at U.S. Steel before embarking on a long and fulfilling career as a firefighter for the City of Clairton. A man of deep community commitment, Michael was elected to serve as Ward 4 District 1 Committeeman and volunteered his time as a coach for the youth baseball and basketball teams. He also served on the board of the American Legion.

Michael was lovingly called "Uncle Mike" by family and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in fishing, camping, and spending time in nature. His love for animals, especially dogs, was well-known and endearing. Michael's wisdom and humor left a lasting impression on those who knew him. He had many quotes, one being “Don’t take no wooden nickels.” And the first law of nature is SELF-PRESERVATION: “If you can’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of anyone else,” continue to resonate with those he held dear.

Michael passed away on January 10, 2025 at Jefferson Hospital, surrounded by loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved brother, Allison "Al" Walker and closest friend/brother, Clifford “Slim” Berry. He is survived by his siblings, Robert Herman Walker Jr., Tyrone Walker, and Avis “Jean” Stoutemire; god sister, Lorraine Cole; children, Michael Walker of San Francisco, CA, Caeser Walker of Fayetteville, NC, Joslyn Johnson of Clairton, PA, and Jasmine (Carlos) Saunders of Pittsburgh, PA; ten grandchildren; his endeared children, Karen Bowzer, Alonzo Corley, Darius Bradford, Shalandra Gardner, Aisha Johnson, Terrence Johnson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.

Michael’s legacy is one of love, service, and community. His presence will be profoundly missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
