Michael Scott Obituary

Michael J. Scott was born to parents Randolph R. Scott, Sr., and Clydie Mae Morton Scott in McKeesport, PA.  He grew up in a blended family.  He was number eight in line.  From childhood, Michael showed a great interest in music, science, theology, and martial arts:

Michael was a lover of all kinds of music. He loved to sing and dance. He played the harmonica, melodica, guitar, and tuba.  He loved listening to metronomes at different rhythm and beat levels.  He utilized it for training purposes, concentration in writing, studying, relaxation and meditation techniques.

Early on Michael loved to experiment with operating on insects and providing life-saving measures. It was not a great surprise when he joined the Navy in 1976 and studied Dental Hygiene and Operating Room Technology.  He served in the United States Navy for a 4-year term and then committed to another 2-year term in the Navy Reserves.  After completing his contracts with the United State Navy, he was honorably discharged.

Michael loved God and enjoyed reading the Word and studying the Bible.  He was a teen Minister and performed his trial Sermon at the tender age of thirteen.  His love of the Lord led him to further study all versions of the Bible and reveled in its different translations.  He was a collector of many biblical books, was well-versed, and could hold his own with any clergy member.  He challenged anyone to look further than just reading the Word but really understanding it and making it applicable to one’s everyday life.  Michael truly had a gift for breaking down scripture and inspiring others to look deeper for the Word's true meaning.  Michael was very proud to receive his Ministerial License and loved carrying his credentials everywhere.  It gave him great pleasure to use the “Clergy” placard in designated parking spots when his services were necessary.

Michael studied martial arts along with his lifelong friend Master Henry Graves from the Dojo of Sensei Master Harold Jackson. Michael also was a teacher of the “Jacksonian Principals” Martial Arts form; his first students were Eric J. Scott, Carlton Robertson, and Bill Wesson.  Throughout the years, Michael continued studying martial arts perfecting his own style which earned him the title of “Grand Master 10th Dan Black Belt”.  Michael was the founder and creator of this form of martial arts and was very proud to have established the “Tao Shen Mu Institute”.  This was a unique system of martial arts that was only taught by himself.
During Michael’s journey on the road of life, he disappeared for an extended period.  Michael rose from the depths of despair and joined AA.  With the help and guidance of Sponsors Matthew Schneider, (Madelyn Schneider - wife) and Steve Mitchell, who affectionately called him “The Giant” because when Michael entered a room his presence was felt.  These three individuals gained Michael’s trust and love.  They played an instrumental role in his recovery and sobriety of 20-plus years.  Their love, patience, support, and guidance gave Michael the strength and courage that was needed in order to tap into his core values.  This was the saving grace that led to his road home.  Just as in the Bible story of the Prodigal Son, Michael was welcomed back into the family with open arms.  He came home on a mission to be the primary caregiver for our elderly father in which he did a phenomenal job for seven years until the death of our beloved father.  Michael did not stop there.  He settled all unpaid debts and made right his wrongs. He continued to dedicate the rest of his life to the service of others.  Michael earned his degree as a Certified Recovery Specialist and provided counseling and resources for those suffering from addiction, and he became a sponsor to others.  He was employed by Eighth Avenue Ministries where he continued his service in feeding the hungry and supplying clothing and blankets to those in need.  He joined the United Methodist Church and delivered the Word of God on some Sundays in the absences of the Pastor and Co-Pastor.  He also dedicated some of his time to the homeless shelters in McKeesport and the Pittsburgh Onala Recovery Center.  Michael proved himself to be a true servant of the Lord. Michael’s experiences in life led him to write his first book and have it published.  This was a very proud moment for both him and the family.  The book is called “One of the Many” available on Amazon.  By reading this book, it could be surmised that any one of us could become One of the Many, at any time.

Michael had great love and respect for his family.  He was diligent in his efforts to reconcile years and time lost.  He formed individual bonds with each family member.  The things that he accomplished in just ten short years of reemergence were phenomenal, to say the least.  Michael accomplished more in this span of time than most people accomplish in a lifetime.

Michael departed this earthly life at his final Port of Call, David Simpson Hospice House, located in Cleveland, OH on Sunday, January 15, 2023, with family by his side.  He had a magnificent view of Lake Erie, so peaceful and serene.  At 4:43 pm, Michael boarded his chariot, Heaven Bound.
