Martha Knott Coon, 102, was born May 3, 1918, in Boligee, Alabama. She was the daughter of the late Pastor Jim and Mary Jenkins Knott.
Mrs. Martha moved to Clairton, Pennsylvania in 1962. She was employed at the Clairton Cleaning Company. After many years, she retired as a housekeeper for the Bates family in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Martha, affectionately known as Mutter, was a quiet, easy going, and loving person. She enjoyed family gatherings and attending family reunions. Some of her favorite things were eating delicious food, listing to gospel music and watching the ministry network channel.
Mrs. Coon being a praying woman, joined Morning Star Baptist Church on May 17, 1964 under the leadership of the late Rev. Rosamond C. Kay, Jr. There she met and married the love of her life, the late Trustee Sylvester Coon. Mrs. Coon was the longest living member at Morning Star, celebrating over 50 years of dedicated service to her God and church family. Having a caring spirit, Mrs. Coon was a past member of the Anita Kay Missionary. She had a passion for visiting the sick and shut in. She served her God well.
On January 01, 2021, Mrs. Coon departed this life peacefully at Southwestern Healthcare Center. She was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother Maggie Addy Knott; loving husband, Sylvester Coon; Leslie Johnson, whom she reared; siblings, Joseph Knott, Mary Jennings, and Ida Johnson.
Mrs. Coon is survived by her stepdaughter, Bernice C. (James, Jr.) Griffin; daughter-in-law, Celestine Henley Johnson; nephews, Jonathan (Mary) Johnson, Jr., whom she reared and Julius Johnson; seven grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; an abundance of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
