The Life of Miss Cindy
Lucinda Mayo, affectionately known as ‘Miss Cindy’, was born July 10, 1926, in Clairton, PA to Benjamin and Frances (Hawkins) Spencer. She attended school in the Clairton School District and later attained her GED.
She was employed as a housekeeper to support herself and her three beautiful children Ronald, Darnell, and Anita. After raising her children and dotting on her grands, Cindy’s fingerprints can be found throughout the Clairton community:
Library Walking Club, Eastern Stars (Member/Grand Matron), Marion Circle Tenant Council (President), Girls Mentoring Program (Founder), Reaching the Unreachable, Voting Poll Worker, NAACP
If you ever lived in Clairton, you knew Miss Cindy! Some may remember her for being strong-willed and unafraid to share her sage advice with the young and experienced. Others may remember her for being spirited and quick-witted. Always ready to share a testimony to help set you on the right path.
Miss Cindy understood her Earthly assignment …raise your children in the way they should go….and, treat others the way you want to be treated. We were loved and admired by many for her strength, dedication, integrity, and determination, right up to the very end.
At the time of her passing, Miss Cindy was a faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Clairton, PA for more than 60 years. Prior to that, she was a member of First AME Church. She loved the Lord and served the church in many capacities over the years, including Flower Guild, Missionary Ministry, Anita Kay Mission (Secretary), Pastors Aid, Excelsiors Art Club, Women’s Ministry, Sr Usher (Secretary), Usher Board #2 (Secretary), Kitchen Committee, Sun Beams Children’s Choir (Assistant), Junior Choir, AUBA/Sunday School
She was an avid reader and doll collector. During her spare time, she nurtured her artistic side by painting and coloring. In her younger years, she also enjoyed needlepoint and coin collecting. As a young adult, Lucinda loved to play mushball a.k.a. softball for the Lady Blazers.
The walls of her home were filled with pictures of her lovely children, grand-children and great, grand-children, and even great-great-grandchildren.
