Kevin Charles Murphy Obituary

In Loving Memory of Kevin Charles Murphy

Kevin Charles Murphy, affectionately known as "Kev," lived a life that touched hundreds, if not thousands, of hearts. Born as the first male child of Gary LaVal and Barbara Bailey Murphy, Kevin's journey was marked by love, dedication, and an infectious spirit that made everyone around him better.

From his earliest days as a son and big brother, Kevin embraced each role with his whole heart. He became a phenomenal basketball player, known for his wizardry in handling the "pill" on the court. Standing 5'4" (or 5'9" with his iconic afro), Kev played like he was nine feet tall. His confidence was second-to-none, and his skills were matched only by the size of his heart—his greatest asset. His extraordinary talents on the court earned him induction into the Connie Hawkins Hall of Fame, a testament to his impact on the game he loved.

But those who knew Kevin understood that his true legacy extended far beyond the basketball court. He served his country with honor in the Army, demonstrating the same dedication and courage that would define his entire life. He embodied that rare trait of extending support to those who asked and to those he felt compelled to help. His unconditional love and determination to make people smile became his calling card, touching lives in ways both big and small.

Kevin's life continued to evolve as he embraced the roles of Father, Husband, and eventually Grandfather—each transition bringing new joy and purpose. Through it all, he remained surrounded by the love of family, friends, and faith. He gave 100% to everything he did, win, lose, or draw, and he sacrificed much to elevate others.  Kevin's service to his large family and to children and youth was his true calling. He had a unique gift for bringing joy to everyday moments—even turning his floor buffer into a basketball, making it spin 360 degrees hands-free while dancing beside it, his floor care passion bringing smiles to all who witnessed it.

Though we will deeply miss the "Little Giant" whose presence loomed so large in our lives, we will never forget him. His legacy lives on in our memories and in our hearts, in every act of kindness, every moment of encouragement, and every life he touched. To know Kevin was to love him. His message to us was always clear: give it 100%, no matter what.  Kevin was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Bailey Murphy, brothers, Mark Murphy, Troy Allen, father-in-law, Gregory Sands, mother-in-law, Shavawn Henderson sister-in-law, Chantell Turner, Goddaughter, Monica Armstrong.

Kevin is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 22 years, Terra Henderson Murphy, of Duquesne, PA; father, Gary LaVal Murphy, of McKeesport, PA; children, Iyana Tennon, of  FL, Gavin Webb, of McKeesport, PA, Raymone Henderson, of Duquesne, PA, Kadera Murphy, of McKeesport, PA; grandchildren, Tyler and Tristyn Murphy; siblings, Joy Banks, of GA, Kim Murphy, of VA, Keith (Charla) Murphy, of  McKeesport, PA and Melissa Murphy, of McKeesport, PA; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, Douglas (April) Elash of TX, Melodee Scott-Lonesome, of GA, Ramone (Barbara) Henderson, of Duquesne, PA, Majid Cobbs, of Duquesne, PA, Greg Sands, Jr., of MI, Sharone Henderson, of McKeesport, PA, Nathaniel Sands, of CO, Brittney Sands, of NC, Siddiqah Sands, and Destiney Henderson; godson, Robert Doiley; honorary brothers, Marcellus Allen, Pablo Redwood, Richard Meggett, and James “Doc” Jones; caretakers, Shadasia Robinson and Terri Davis; host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.
