Mr. Herman Washington was born in Colquitt, Ga., on January 28, 1933, to his parents, the late Ezember Washington and Leodis (Miller) Washington.
Herman and his brother James were raised in Haines City, FL. In his early twenties, Herman, along with many black Southerners migrated to the Northeast in the Great Migration. Joining many family members, Herman settled in Clairton, PA where he pursued an apprenticeship as a baker. In 1959, he married Mary “Mae” Candis (McKee) of Hamlet, NC at the Gethsemane Church of God in Christ. Together they raised their family and served faithfully at the Morning Star Baptist Church. Herman was a long-standing member of the Deacon Board along with many other ministries. To keep the extended family ties strong, Herman and his relatives established a bi-annual family reunion that continues today.
He was active in the community in both service and entrepreneurially. He was known as the “Cleaner Man” serving Clairton residents with concierge dry cleaning services for many decades. On his property, he maintained a bustling farm growing fruits and vegetables that he shared with anyone in need. Deacon Washington loved God, his family, his church, and his community. Mr. and Mrs. Washington were honored by the City of Clairton for their exemplary service to the community. Mr. Washington was well known for his resourcefulness, hospitality, and welcoming friends and family to fellowship at his home for meals that were both plentiful and delicious.
