Gertrude Mae (Phillips) Sterling

Gertrude Mae Phillips Sterling was born on May 31, 1926, in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania.  She was the daughter of the late Leroy C. Phillips and Mary E. Parker Phillips.  Gertrude was preceded in death by her former husband, Harold T. Sterling.  Gertrude passed away at the tender age of 93, peacefully in her home on July 3, 2019.

Gertrude was a devoted Christian and loved the Lord.  She was baptized on May 3, 1992, and eventually became the Mother of the Gospel of Jesus Church in Duquesne, Pennsylvania.

Gertrude spent her life raising her six children.  She was also a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; the family was very important to her.  Gertrude enjoyed going to church, praising the Lord, and socializing with her church family.  Gertrude was known for keeping her home impeccable and her love of gardening.  Gertrude also enjoyed going to the hair and nail salon routinely.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her children, Melvin K. Sterling and Linda L. Sterling; her seven siblings, Harry Phillips, Marshall Phillips, and Kenneth Phillips, Mary Flintall, Hazel Phillips, Violet Jones, and Marva Pennington Martin, and her faithful nephew, Minister Garey L. Flintall.

Gertrude’s loving memory will be forever be cherished by her children, Diana (Woodrow) James of McKeesport, Harold “Jerry” (Wanda) Sterling of Penn Hills, JoAnn Meekins of McKeesport, and Lisa Dyer of Pittsburgh.  Gertrude also raised her eldest, devoted granddaughter, Erika (Gary) Still of McKeesport, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives, and many friends
