Gaila Johnson, of Clairton, was born January 22, 1953 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She was the only child of the late Elizabeth (Johnson) Hamlin and John Wright. On October 8, 2021, Gaila went on to be with her Lord, peacefully at home surrounded by her family.
Gaila graduated from the Clairton City School District. She furthered her education by taking classes at CCAC– South Campus. As a beloved mother of three, she shared her love for children by being a Foster grandparent for the schools in Clairton, along with Youth Places and Gwen Girls through AmeriCorps. She was affectionately known as “Grandma Gail.” Gaila had a genuine passion working with kids, and everyone knows how much she loved her own grandchildren. She had an eye for fashion. She enjoyed going to concerts with friends, watching movies and cooking for her family.
Gaila’s life was a living example of Proverbs 22:6, “ Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” She was a former member of Kingdom C.O.M.E Ministries, where she worked with the Children’s Church and served on the Kitchen Committee.
Gaila is survived by her two daughters, Tiffani (Deron) Hurt, Ebony (Sean) Thomas all of Clairton, Pennsylvania; son, Kaleb (Shala) Howard of Verona, Pennsylvania; brother Derrick Hamlin of Clairton, Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; extended relatives and friends.
