Everta McDougald Johnson, 90, of Clairton, was born March 18, 1933, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. She was the beloved daughter of the late Cassie and Bertha Benton McDougald.
Everta attended and graduated in 1955 from Lincoln Heights School in Laurinburg, North Carolina. After graduation, she followed her brother Harvey McDougald to Clairton in 1956 to start her life. Everta worked in various restaurants as a cook, including one of the first soul food restaurants in Clairton, the Greasy Spoon and Nettie’s Place. Throughout her life, she became a foster parent to many children.
Everta received Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior in 1957 at Gethsemane Church of God in Christ of Clairton, PA. Over the years she was the president of the Usher Board and a faithful member of the Pastor’s aide and YWCC and WCC. Everta was an integral part of the kitchen committee being the president for years creating special dishes for various banquets and other events at the church and church picnics. She is also known for her homemade sweet potato pies and fried chicken.
Everta departed this life on November 27, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her father, Cassie McDougald, mother, Bertha Benton McDougald, son Wallace Johnson, Jr., four brothers, James McDougald, Granvis McDougald, Bill McDougald, Harvey McDougald, sister, and Irinza McDougald.
Everta is survived by her loving family; son, Byron Johnson; three daughters, Kim Johnson, Sivi (Daniel) Hester, all of Clairton, Pennsylvania, Treva Johnson of Granada Hills, California; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Farrel McDougald of Camden, New Jersey and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
