Eleanor Janet Mays was born October 17, 1935, in Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late James Robert and Hannah Jane Harris. Eleanor attended and graduated from North Union High school in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. After high school, she gained employment at Kaufmann’s Department Store in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, as an elevator operator.
June 16, 1959, Eleanor met and married the love of her life, Herbert Mays, their love story lasted for sixty-three wonderful years. God blessed this union with two beautiful daughters. Soon after marriage, they moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where Eleanor earned employment at Blue Cross, Blue Shield. After thirty-five dedicated years, she retired to enjoy the next chapter of her life. Eleanor then began cruising yearly with her traveling group of lifelong friends.
Following the example set by Jesus, Eleanor was baptized on June 1, 1945, at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Uniontown, Pennsylvania under the pastorate of the late Reverend West. After her family relocated back to Pennsylvania, on May 4, 1986, she joined Morning Star Baptist Church in Clairton, Pennsylvania under the pastorate of the late Reverend William Nathan Simon. It was evident that she loved the Lord on September 8, 1986, she was appointed to the MSBC Trustee Ministry. Eleanor was also a member of the Pastor’s Aide Ministry and a former member of the “Gimme A Break Choir”.
The Lord called Eleanor home to spend eternity with Him on March 20, 2023. She was proceeded in death by her sisters, Vermel Wilson, and Lois Harris.
She was loved by many and will always be remembered by her loving husband, Herbert Mays; two devoted daughters, Toni Smith, and Kim (Wayne) Moffette; She adored her family, especially her grandchildren; Akeia (Gino) Jones, Kristen (Chiemezie) Ukaumunna, Everett Ricardo Smith, and Christian Jones; great-grandchildren, Jadyn Jones, Ariyon Jones, Gabrielle Ukaumunna, Jidenna Ukaumunna, and Ikenna Ukaumunna; beloved sisters, Mabel “Tooter” Jordan and Jackie Harris; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
