Asaline Coon Peterson 91, of Clairton, was born on December 2, 1930, in Clairton Pennsylvania. She was the beloved daughter to the late Calvin and Ora Lee (Johnson) Coon.
Asaline was a graduate of Clairton High School, class of 1948. She continued her education at Grace Martin Business School of Pittsburgh in 1954. In September of 1955, she was employed by the Pennsylvania Industrial Chemical Corporation of Clairton in the communications department. As the first African American to hold such a position, she was the pride of the community and admired by many. She held this position for 8 years. In 1968, Asaline was hired as a switchboard operator by the Clairton Board of Education and later continued to break down racial barriers as the first African American woman to hold the position as the private secretary to the superintendent. She was an active member of the NAACP Clairton branch and for many years was a delegate for the black YWBA.
Asaline was united in marriage to the late Walter L Peterson on April 20, 1957, by Rev. James H. King. To this union, one son, Walter Neil Peterson was born. Asaline joined the Mt. Olive Baptist Church under Rev. E.W. Starks in 1941. She has been an active member ever since. In 1942 at the tender age of 11, she was asked to play for the senior choir under the direction of her father. She continued to play and direct for over 67 years not only with Mt Olive Baptist church but also with St John Evangelist Baptist church where she was the director for the Angelic Choir and the Senior Choir. She was the secretary for the Sunday school for more than 20 years. She was a member of the senior usher board and an honorary deaconess. She was a tireless servant until she retired in 2008. Asaline loved the Lord and was a dedicated and faithful servant for over 80 years to her beloved Mt. Olive.
On Monday, August 29, 2022, Asaline answered the call and went home to be with the Lord. Asaline was preceded in death by her husband Walter L Peterson; brothers Alfred Coon and Alvin Coon (Wilma); brother-in-law Robert Lester; Sister Shirley (Coon) King (Bernard).
She leaves to cherish her memory son, Walter Neil Peterson (Ernestine); grandson, Walter Neil Peterson Jr.; brother, William Coon Ph.D. (Yvonne); sister, Robbia Lester and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and the Mt Olive First Baptist Church family.
