Alonzo L. Brown Jr.

Alonzo L. Brown, Jr. 87, was born and raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He entered this world on October 23, 1933, in McKeesport, PA. He was the beloved son to Alonzo L. and Minnie (Casen) Brown, departed this life on June 24, 2021, at home. He was preceded in death by father, Alonzo L. Brown, Sr., mother, Minnie Christine Brown, daughter, Valerie Lynn Brown, son, Stuart Eugene Brown, daughter, Betty Christine Brown-Smith, sister, Juliette Brown, sister, Anna Lee Harper, brother/nephew, Arthur “Sonny” Brown, and grandson, Richard “Ricky” W. Herring II.  

Alonzo attended the Mckeesport Area High School and graduated in 1951. Upon graduation, he would enlist and serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After receiving an honorable discharge he would later reenlist in the Naval reserves.

Alonzo worked at USS Steel, National Tube Works and Mon Yough Community Services where he retired at the age of 80. He was a member of the American Legion and Post 0666. Alonzo was also a lifetime member of St. Paul AME Church. He served as a member of the Trustee Board and the Senior Usher board. Alonzo loved his family and being with his family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, family vacations and attending the Brown-Gregory family reunions. 

After retiring, Alonzo could often be seen driving his red truck and visiting with his friends at the “Coffee Shop”.  He would leave early in the morning but was always home for lunch. In the evenings at home, he enjoyed watching the Travel Channel, The Antique Road Show and National Geographic. He instilled in his children an excellent work ethic. He taught them to underpromise and overdeliver. 

Alonzo “Al, Nab or Junior”; as he was affectionately called by friends and family, is survived by his loving spouse of 47 years, Carol Ann (Walker) Brown; two sons, William L. Brown of McKeesport, Alonzo L. (Omari L.) Brown III of Easton, PA; two daughters, Maureen E. Mays of Davison, MI, Theresa A. (Donald C.) Walker-Garett of McKeesport; son-in-law, Douglas Smith of Dover, DE; 11 Grandchildren, 9 Great-grandchildren, Niece Leslie Hamilton of McKeesport, PA, Close cousin Martha Jackson, of Charleston, SC,  as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

To us, he was a man of few words with great wisdom. But most of all, we will remember him for fighting a good fight, finishing the race and the love that he shared with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family and friends.
