Mary R. Smith Jeffries, 92, of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, departed this life away on Monday, April 1, 2019, in Kane Regional Nursing Center.
She was born August 2, 1926, to the late James H. and Eliza Ann Butler Smith in Sumter, SC and was also predeceased by her husband, James W. Jeffries, Sr.
Mary was a product of Lincoln High School in Sumter, SC. As a young woman, her family relocated to Duquesne, Pennsylvania, where she became a life-long resident and a well-known and respected member of the community.
She was a charter member of Macedonia Baptist Church, for over sixty-six years where she was affectionately known as, “The Diva”, where she ministered through her services on the Hospitality Committee, the Kitchen Committee, and also sang in the Choir. She was a founding member of the Duquesne Dukes bowling league and loved to travel.
Mary worked as a Supervisor in the Patient Escort Department for the former Presbyterian University Hospital for over twenty years.
Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Mary Darlene Jeffries of Palmdale, California, James E. (Rosalind) Jeffries of Stafford, Virginia, Marlene Patricia Davidson of Duquesne, and Vanessa Denise (Melvin G.) Brandon of Turtle Creek; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and twenty-four great, great-grandchildren; one sister Bernice Truesdale of Duquesne, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She touched the lives of everyone she met.
Friends will be received Thursday, April 4, 2019, from 4- 8 pm at Macedonia Baptist Church, 17 Cochran Street, Duquesne, Pennsylvania, where services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am with Rev. Archie D. Perrin, Jr. officiating.
Interment will follow in the Homewood Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
